WHAT?

The development of iPadOS empowered the device with two user interfaces, the traditional touch/pen first UI and the desktop-like UI enabled by keyboard & mouse input. However, accessories in the market often limit users into one option. The iPad Pro Duo is a case that aims to change that.

HOW?

The iPad Pro Duo is a case for the iPad Pro 11 inch that adds the screen from a HP chromebook via a clamshell design. This specific panel was chosen due to how closely it matches the iPad’s internal display. Additionally, the clamshell form factor was enabled by using hinges taken from a Dell XPS 9365. All parts were reverse engineered in Creo Parametric.

The bottom housing was designed according to Apple’s Accessories Design Guidelines to ensure optimal fit and iPad functionality. The 3D printed and Aluminum design was also implemented for uniformity while the bottom plate has space for a low-profile laptop stand.

The top housing of the iPad Pro Duo holds the Chromebook’s screen and driverboard. This assembly was designed to be 3d printed and has an aluminum top plate that ensures structural rigidity while also providing a pleasant finish. The design for this housing was driven by parametric relations related to panel dimensions to enable a highly iterative design process and 3 other iterations with different panels and donor parts.
